PetPass Tuning: How to Optimize Detection for Your Smart Pet Door
The SmartSlydr PetPass system is designed to give your pets freedom while maintaining your home's security. To ensure the most responsive and reliable performance, a little "tuning" goes a long way.
If you want to improve your PetPass tag detection, follow this expert optimization guide.
Note on Timing: It is normal to experience a 10-15 second wait time when your dog reaches the door. This intentional delay helps the system verify the pet's intent and prevents "false openings" from pets simply passing by the door.
1. Proper Collar Tag Placement
How your pet wears the PetPass tag significantly impacts how well the SmartSlydr receives signals.
-
Snug Fit is Essential: We recommend securing the tag directly to the collar rather than letting it hang. A hanging tag will not transmit the signal properly and is more likely to be lost or damaged. A snug fit ensures the tag stays secure and maintains a clear line of sight to the antenna.
-
Button Side Up: The transmitter is located on the side with the SmartSlydr logo (the Button Side). Always use the collar strap to keep the Button Side facing up (outward) for the best signal path.
-
Avoid Metal Interference: Keep the PetPass tag away from metal charms, large metal D-rings, or heavy metal buckles. Metal objects can shield the tag or interfere with the signal transmission.
-
Location Matters: Try different positions on your pet's neck. Depending on your pet's height and gait, one side may work better than the other.

2. Perfecting the Antenna Installation
The placement and condition of your antenna are the most critical factors for both signal strength and overall system stability.
-
Functionality: Remember that the antenna is responsible for both your Wi-Fi connection and the PetPass trigger.
-
Avoid Damage: If the antenna is pinched, compromised, or stretched during installation, you will likely experience Wi-Fi fluctuations and intermittent PetPass operation.
-
The "Between the Frame" Method: We recommend sticking the antenna sensor directly between the door frames. This allows the tag to catch the signal from both the interior and exterior effectively.

-
Use Organization Clips: We highly recommend using additional cable clips to keep the wire tight and flush against the door frame. This prevents the wire from being accidentally caught or damaged during door movement.
-
Test Before You Stick: If you aren't sure about the best spot, use temporary tape (like painters tape) to test the detection before using the permanent adhesive.
-
Pro Tip: Do not try to remove or relocate the antenna once it is stuck. Peeling it off can permanently damage the sensitive internal sensors.
3. Optimizing Tag Sensitivity & Debug Mode
Every home environment is different. Interference from other electronics, wall materials, or the door frame itself can affect signal range.
-
The Starting Point: Start with a sensitivity of 2 or 3. Then, use the Debug Mode to determine the perfect setting for your specific environment.
-
Adjusting Range: If the door triggers from too far away, reduce the sensitivity. If you need it to trigger sooner, increase it.
How to Use Debug Mode:
-
Open the app, go to PetPass settings, and turn on the PetPass Debug button.
-
Ensure sound is enabled in your app settings.
-
Wiggle the tag slightly to ensure it is awake. SmartSlydr will begin making sounds to indicate the signal strength:
-
Three fast beeps: The tag is within opening range. If it beeps while the dog is too far away, decrease sensitivity.
-
Two beeps: The tag is close but not yet in opening range. If you don't hear three beeps even when the pet is at the door, increase sensitivity.
-
One beep (or no beep): The tag is too far away to trigger.
-
-
Out of Sync? If the tag is right next to the antenna and there is no sound, it may be out of sync. Refer to the "How to pair PetPass" guide.
-
Note: Debug Mode automatically turns off after 60 beeps. Please debug only one PetPass at a time.
4. Understanding the "Idle Mode" (Battery Saving)
To prevent your door from opening and closing repeatedly while your pet sleeps near it, the PetPass tag features an intelligent motion sensor.
-
The 30-Second Rule: If the tag remains completely still for 25–30 seconds, it enters "Idle Mode" and stops transmitting.
-
Wake-Up Call: The tag wakes up instantly upon movement. If your pet is standing still by the door and it won't open, advise them to move.
-
Training Tip: Train your dog to "spin" or "jump" slightly when they reach the door to ensure the tag is fully "awake" and transmitting.
5. Advanced Range: The Dual Antenna Setup
If one antenna isn't providing the coverage you need, you can upgrade to a Dual Antenna setup using a signal splitter.
Recommended Installation Method:
-
Fully open your sliding door.
-
Locate the silicone strip on the back side of the door frame (where the antenna wire exits the SmartSlydr).
-
Gently pull on the wire until the brass connector is exposed.
-
Attach the splitter to the brass connector, then connect both antennas.
-
Testing Placement: Use duct tape to temporarily position the second antenna about 6 inches above or below the original one to find the best signal.

-
Exterior Coverage: You can route one of the antennas to the outside of the door frame for dedicated exterior detection.
